St. Andrews University Polo Club and the RAF came head-to-head this weekend at their inaugural bike polo tournament at the far end of West Sands on Saturday. Bike polo is a game involving quick thinking and manoeuvring, and is used to teach the rules and tactics of polo. Pilots and crewmen from RAF Benson (near Oxford) made a spectacular entrance by landing their Puma helicopter on West Sands.
The University Polo Club may not have matched their stylish arrival but fought bravely on the polo pitch (150m x 80m rectangle marked out in the sand) to ensure that they gave the RAF a run for their money. Spectators enjoyed watching plenty of spills and bent spokes while sampling the culinary delights on offer. The teams were well matched throughout, with the RAF living up to their reputation of being fast and fearless. The accolades were shared equally with the RAF C team beating St Andrews C and the B-teams drawing. In an exciting final with a nail-biting ending, St Andrews A, comprising of Captain Robert Morrison, Vicky Woodhead and Ellie Hoogewerf narrowly beat RAF A, captained by Kris Bebbington, 6 goals to 5 to win the C-View trophy presented by Mervyn Fox-Pitt (Dundee and Perth Polo Club).
The RAF also has a fast-growing polo club and a re-match is already planned for next year at RAF Benson. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day a success.
