The Kingdom of Fife, Robert Morrison and Ali Rea co-founded The University of St Andrews Polo Club in September 2002. Previous to this, Robert Morrison made polo available in association with the St. Andrews Riding Club by coaching bike polo and establishing connections with the Dundee and Perthshire, and Edinburgh Polo Clubs. Now the St Andrews Polo Club has grown and plays regularly at these clubs. There are 4 committee members who meet every week with the 15 active members and circulate e-mails regularly amongst this year's 50 paid-members.
The University of St Andrews Polo Club committee aims to make the sport of polo more financially viable to those who want to play by looking for sponsorship. We already have Crew Clothing as a clothes sponsor. Also, the world's number 6 polo player, Eduardo Heguy has recently agreed to become our Club's President and is keen to help us organise a fund raising event and put a package together to encourage other potential sponsors. Gus Pichot, captain of the Argentine Rugby Team, has accepted to be our honorary Chairman.
The committee organises at least one social event per semester in order to make profits for the Club. In December, a Christmas party was organised for members and their guests to make a profit for the Club. The Club also hosted the 'Horses for Courses' Ball with the Golf and Tennis Clubs on the 18th April. This generated some capital for the Club, but also helped to make the new Polo Club recognised within St Andrews.
The Club had its first tournament at Inglesham on 11th -15th February 2003. This is the annual Open University National Championship. By practising at Edinburgh Polo Club, we independently qualified to enter with a beginner and an intermediate team. This introduced polo to new players and drew together the experienced polo players in St Andrews into a team for the first time.
